RE: snakes,, NOT pets

Snakes eat dog food?
I think the OP meant to say that the dog food attracts rodents, which are a food source for the snakes.

RE: For those of us who were unable to camp this weekend...

We attempted to camp at Fort DeSoto this weekend - - rain, rain and more rain. We had to pack it up early during a break in the rain and head back home - all thanks to Gustav's outer bands!

RE: Changing a Family Traditon

We did Thanksgiving dinner at a local state park last year for the first time. We had a blast! Family on both sides came, along with friends. We did the turkey and ham and everyone else brought a dish to share. We even had the satellite dish set up - couldn't miss the Packers play football!

RE: Florida state parks

Myakka River State Park is one of the largest state parks in Florida. If you like wildlife, you'll love it! You'll see lots of gators, wild hogs, deer, racccoons, armadillos, opossum, all kinds of wading birds, etc. It's a great place for biking - miles of paved roads. There are also plenty of hiking trails. The campground itself is okay, although a lot of the sites are rather close together. Bathrooms are usually kept fairly clean, although they are outdated. During the winter months they have campfire programs led by the rangers, which are very informative. Be sure to take an airboat ride and a tram tour while you're there!

RE: Good outdoor non-fiction books??

The following are some books I really enjoyed:
1. Hey Ranger (by Jim Burnett)
2. Last Chance to See (by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine)
3. Cool Creatures, Hot Planet (by Marty Essen)
4. Crossing Antarctica (by Will Steger and Jon Bowermaster)
All good reads!

RE: Myakka State Park, Florida? Airboat ride??

You should also do the tram ride - very informative and entertaining. The tram takes you into the backcountry that most people wouldn't otherwise get to see. A wonderful park with tons of wildlife!

RE: Florida CG's

Someone mentioned Lake Kissimmee State Park earlier. It's a great place to camp. Below is a picture of the site we had there. Lots of space between sites.

RE: What is killing the RV Industree?

As for drilling for oil; that ain't the answer. We need to find alternative energy sources to replace our dependence on a dwindling resource. By the eay, we humans cannot be trusted to protect the earth. All it takes is one idiot like the captain of the Exxon Valdez, to make a large negative impact on the environment.
I couldn't agree with you more!

RE: Hillsborough River SP - Florida in mid November

I just checked ReserveAmerica - plenty of sites open right now in mid-November. You shouldn't have any problems with crowds during the week - weekends, however, are a different story. Have a great time!

remember some boneheaded thing you did as a kid and tell me you don't squirm at the thought! And chide yourself for being so dumb! I can think of many boneheaded things I did as an adult that make me squirm at the thought! :S

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

Our cat (Lucky) and our rabbit (Thumper) were the best of friends - they were always together. Thumper recently died of old age - our poor cat now seems lost without him.

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

We were camping at Fort DeSoto in Pinellas County, FL over the July 4th weekend. We tried to do a little fishing from the pier, but the dolphins kept stealing the bait fish off our hooks!

A photo of my son with fish before it ended up in the dolphin's stomach.
